Blue plumbago/leadwort in flower

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides5 (2)It’s hard to beat the cobalt blue flowers of blue plumbago/leadwort in the summer garden. Here is our patch of the durable groundcover, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides in flower today…either full sun or light shade is fine. ┬áDon’t confuse this with the tropical blue African plumbago, Plumbago auriculata…this one is winter hardy to at least Zone 5b.

  1. I use this plant in big container gardens/patio pots and it returns if the pot is stored (Zone 6 / CT) – the blue flowers bloom a long time and look amazing with other complementary colors! And the fall color on the leaves, turning a hint of burgundy red is a nice feature – its a keeper!

  2. I live in your zone in western Wake County. I’ve tried this plant before, but had trouble getting it to flourish in light shade. Does it die back in the winter?
