Native green meatballs

While the focus of PDN is perennial plants, we have a strong woody plant focus in our surrounding botanic garden. A plant that’s really impressed us is a very dwarf form of our native yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria ‘Oscar’, that was shared by Mobile, Alabama plantsman Marteen VanderGiessen. This is a photo of our 9 year old parent plant that’s never been sheared, forming a very tight 30″ tall x 44″ wide ball. Just think…native green meatballs with no pruning. We think this is so amazing, we’ve propagated a few to share with you in 2019.

  1. I have used these for several years and they are in my top 10 fav’s. Treesearch Farms has been out for a while can’t wait till they get them back. I have one place I planted them that had them encased in ice with no damage and then when they had only been in the ground six months we had Hurricane Harvey and the street is the main drain for the neighborhood. They were under 4 feet of flowing water for several days and they are fine. These are little bullet proof super stars that grow to the perfect size for small spaces!

  2. I love that “Meatball!”
Yaupon holly is a wonderful substitute for troublesome boxwood in
South Carolina and a perfect ball without shearing. Amazing.
    Thanks!
