Salvia ‘Amistad’

Salvia Amistad8

Our clump of Salvia ‘Amistad‘ in the garden is finally starting to flower.  This was a real test winter for this new introduction, and only 1 of our 4 garden clumps survived the winter, so we’ve changed our preliminary hardiness rating from 7b-10, guessing to Zone 8a.  We’re obviously disappointed, but we’ll continue to grow what we think is one of the finest summer-flowering salvias that we’ve ever grown.  For those of you north of Zone 7b, you’ll find this an amazing tender perennial.

I love this plant. It’s unlike any of the other salvia I have on my property (at least 25). I’m in zone 8b in a area with some snow and freezing temps rarely in winter, hot summers and some brutal winds. I also have lost several of these plants, but the ones that have survived have been in fairly sheltered locations, part sun, with proximity to the house. It is worth the trouble!

  2. I have 2 clumps in Tyler, TX, zone 8b – mulched it real well this last winter – they survived 15 degrees, an ice storm in March and a late freeze. Really fine cultivar!!
